The International Republican Institute (IRI) McCain Fellowship for Freedom is a program brought together a cohort of young political leaders from around the world to the United States for an exchange with policymakers, thought leaders, American entrepreneurs, and others to gain insights and build networks necessary to fostering resilient democracies rooted in economic freedom.
This year, as the founder and executive director of Bullyid App, Agita Pasaribu was selected as a fellow alongside seven other young leaders from the globe. Bullyid App’s work on providing accessible mental health and legal support to victims of online gender-based violence aligns with IRI’s mission of fostering a new generation of democratic leaders.
As shared in a press release, fellows were invited to workshops on local and national governance, discussions with business and tech leaders, as well as learning sessions on democratic practices, campaign management, and policymaking. Through this program, we identified how online abuse, particularly online gender-based violence, could negatively impact civic participation. Freedom from harm starts from strengthening protective measures against online harm and empowering internet users with digital literacy.
