On March 4-5, 2026, our Executive Director, Agita Pasaribu, took part in the Fourth Global Symposium Technology-facilitated Gender-based Violence (TFGBV). The event, which was co-hosted by UNFPA, Global Affairs Canada, and the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), was held under the theme “From ‘What’ to ‘How?’: Practical Strategies to Advance Collective, Holistic Action.” It amassed more than 2,600 participants from 158 countries, with speakers spread into 10 sessions.
Agita participated in the sixth session, titled “No Survivor Left Behind: Strengthening Inclusive, Survivor-centred Frontline Response,” as a speaker. She was joined by three speakers and one moderator: Karen Soldatic and Eunice Tunggal (Canada Excellence Research Chair in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing), Carl (Maria d’Ajuda), and Abigail Erikson (Chief of UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women and Girls).
In the event, Agita presented Bullyid App’s ongoing efforts in eradicating TFGBV, especially in Indonesia. She highlighted the challenges of maintaining a sustainable reporting system with social media platforms, namely Meta and TikTok, that utilizes both human and AI-powered content moderators. While AI-powered moderation systems are able to detect instances of content that are forbidden on the platform, such as full nudity, it is unable to detect the context of the images shared as well as whether consent from the individuals depicted was obtained. Further, with the rapid development of generative AI and the nature of social media platforms, tracking down intimate image abuse often proves to be challenging.
With that said, these issues can be addressed by involving multiple stakeholders. Agita stressed the impact of joint collaboration between users who fall victim to TFGBV, government bodies, law enforcement, and the aforementioned social media platforms. To avoid false positives/negatives and uphold accountability, all stakeholders must continuously coordinate, monitor, and evaluate privacy violations happening on digital platforms.
