ASEAN Cybersecurity Skilling Programme
The ASEAN Cybersecurity Skilling Programme is a flagship programme of the ASEAN Foundation, in partnership with Microsoft. The programme supports the ASEAN ICT Masterplan 2020 and ASEAN Work Plan on Education 2021-2025.
The ASEAN Foundation and Microsoft collaborate with local implementing partners whose vision and mission align with the programme’s objective. The ASEAN Foundation and Microsoft are seeking fourteen (14) not-for-profit organisations based in the ASEAN region to organise the Training of Trainers (ToT) and implement the Empowerment Sessions for underserved youths.
As a desired implementing partner, BULLYID delivered 1 Training of Trainers workshop consisting of 40 participants. To achieve the goals, BULLYID implemented several initiatives, including:
- Conduct a 10-hour training session using the ASEAN Foundation’s module, guided by the Master Trainer;
- Collaborate with the Master Trainer from the ASEAN Foundation;
- Ensure that ToT participants are involved in the empowerment session or local training afterwards
For the Empowerment Session, BULLYID conducted an empowerment session for a specific number of participants per training session from July to November 2022, with 2,000 end beneficiaries: local underserved youth and communities based in Pekanbaru, Riau. Young people from Pekanbaru currently have low competencies in digital skills which include their understanding of cybersecurity. In the same way, with young people who are there, this is indicated by the lack of awareness of preservice teachers in developing a sense of responsibility in using ICT as a communication medium and activities involving ICT use in their classes.
The importance of ability that must be possessed by students when graduating in the digital age is essential in producing Papuan human resources who are able to compete. An important skill added to the ‘must-have’ list for graduates is the ability to learn and use new technology skillfully quickly, which we were focusing on to involve University students both in the ToT and Empowerment Sessions.
Project Objectives
- Empower underprivileged youth to improve their digital skills and understanding of cybersecurity
- Provide youth with digital skills training to enter the workforce
- Increase youth’s awareness and participation in the development of ICT in society
Main Activities
We want to ensure that those selected to receive training are capable of delivering the knowledge they have gained in the most effective and engaging ways for the empowerment sessions and their communities in the long run.
Target for Training of Trainers (ToT):
- Final Year Computer Science students at Universitas Islam Riau
- Fresh Graduate of Computer Science students from Universitas Islam Riau
Before selecting 40 participants for the Training for Trainers programme based on selection criteria developed by the ASEAN Foundation, internally, we were set up a team to create a pool of candidates.
This pool of candidates is those who have fulfilled the minimum requirements of:
- Able to use computer device and comfortable with receiving materials in English;
- Understand and comfortable using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Powerpoint;
- Understand and comfortable using the internet for browsing, accessing email and operating social media platforms;
- Comfortable communicating with others using video conference tools
As we are targeting 2,000 youth who benefited from the sessions, we delivered five Empowerment Sessions with the expectation of benefiting at least 400 youth in every session. The sessions started from October until December 2022.
Our target for Empowerment Session are:
- Students at Universitas Islam Riau
- Youths with lack of knowledge of digital security and cybersecurity
- Youth living in tier 2 city
The implementation of the Empowerment Sessions will be led by 40 ToT participants who have passed the training and fulfilled all their assessments. For the offline session, the Faculty helped them to arrange the place, which was held at the University’s Faculty. During The offline session, we planned to invite a representative from ASEAN Foundation, Microsoft, and a representative from a local government/cybersecurity expert to join the session. BULLYID team also assisted and coordinated with Trainers who will present and share their knowledge for the Empowerment Sessions.
We dedicate a communication team, consisting of project coordinator, photographer (if the event will be held offline), and social media analyst to greater our awareness by sharing the activities throughout Bullyid Indonesia’s social media where we have over 25,000+ online audience across Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.
The team was responsible for creating content, both images and/or short video clips, as well as the captions to be published across social media. In addition, the team also published 2 articles on BULLYID’s website and sent them to local media partners.
To match the target of the communications campaign to promote the programme and increase awareness on cybersecurity developed and implemented, we ensure that:
- At least 5,000 people reached through social media (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin) by the end of the programme
- At least 2 articles about the training published on local media by the end of the programme;
